Transform an ordinary cube shelf into a nice piece of furniture.
If you’ve seen My Home Tour posts, you might remember this cube shelf from the Girls Shared Room tour.
Since that post, the cube shelf has had a little bit of a makeover. After an unfortunate incident where we ended up having to somewhat re-do the girls’ room, I decided that I wanted to transform the cube shelf to make it more like a piece of furniture. In order to accomplish this, I thought it needed legs.
After mentioning it over and over, I finally convinced hubby that’s what we needed to do. So after a trip to the hardware store we were all set.
Cube Shelf Hack
- Cube Shelf (ours is this one by BHG)
- (4) Table Legs (we used these)
- (4) Table Leg Straight Top Plate (found here….comes with screws to attach)
Step 1: Paint or stain the legs (if desired)
Step 2: Before installing the top plates on the bottom corners of the shelf be sure you will have enough clearance for the center bolt on the table leg. Otherwise, you will need to pre-drill a hole to screw on the table leg.
Step 3: Attach top plates. Keep in mind the width of the table leg you choose when setting the plates. For example, the legs we used are fairly big around so we set our plates in from the corners’ edges so that the legs wouldn’t stick out from the shelf.
Note: Since these types of shelves tend to be hollow, be sure not to get the screws too tight. Also, for extra security, we used a little bit longer screws on the outer vertical pieces of the shelf.
Step 3: Attach table leg to top plate.
We also placed some furniture glides on the bottom of the legs so they wouldn’t get snagged on the carpet and make it easier to move the shelf if needed.
Now you have a cube shelf with a little character! Add some fun baskets or bins and you have yourself a nice piece of inexpensive furniture!
