This DIY farmhouse style bed is easy to build and have an aesthetic for kids and adults alike!
How these beds came to be…
When we moved back into our house, one of the rooms we focused on was the girls’ bedroom. I purchased the cutest glam upholstered beds and some cute bedding (you can check out that post here). Sadly, a little after a year of being in the house, we had to get rid of the beds due to unforeseen reasons. So then I was on the hunt for new beds.
Thanks to my Pinterest account I knew what I wanted to replace their beds. I had been swooning over this bed but the price was soooo out of my price range. So, I continuously showed it to Mr. Embellishology until he figured out I wasn’t going to give up.
While I liked the inspiration beds, I wanted a more farmhouse style bed look to them so after much discussion, Mr. Embellishology did some research and came up with a plan that I loved. (he’s kinda like the Clint to my Joanna) We even went and bought the lights to go on the beds soon after that with the intention of building them soon.
Well, after much procrastination and saving, we finally decided last Fall that it was time to get the girls their beds (they just had a mattress on rails for their beds).
I had planned on new beds being the biggest part of the girls’ Christmas presents so in true embellishology fashion, we started working on the beds 2 weeks before Christmas.
I’m sorry I don’t have a step-by-step detailed tutorial. (Because hello, starting a project 2 weeks before Christmas) I can, however, give you as many details to get you started (and a few bad iphone pics of the process).
DIY Farmhouse Style Bed with Barn Light
Materials Used:
- Pine boards (sizes determined by plans and our modifications)
- Pine wood tongue and groove wall planks (we used the back side with the wider “boards” to give it a more shiplap look)
- barn light
- Paint: Simply White by Benjamin Moore
First, Mr. Embellishology started by using this plan by Ana White, and made a few modifications to make it taller so we could add the light high enough that the girls wouldn’t bump their heads on them. It literally took him around 3 hours to build both headboards.
Then for the platform part of the beds, he used this plan. I think the only thing done differently was with the way it attached to the headboard.
We purchased lights for hard wire installation so we switched them over to corded lights. I didn’t really want a switch on the headboard so we also added a pull chain to the fixture instead. If you don’t have much experience with wiring please have an electrician do this for you!
Here is the primed and painted headboard with the light installed. I cannot tell you how excited I was to see my vision come to life! The farmhouse style bed turned out EXACTLY how I had imagined!
The day before Christmas (we thrive on stress here, lol) we moved the beds to the girls’ room. The girls were ecstatic to finally have actual beds! One thing I didn’t think about with these beds is the light situation. Since they share a room, if one has the light on, the other complains about it being too bright to sleep. Sigh, I guess you can’t win them all, huh?
