Home Tour + Dining Room

This contemporary dining room with rustic elements has come a long way from it’s original country decor.

Before I begin the tour, let’s take a look at the before. I don’t have a good picture of the before before….all I could find was this picture of it in it’s tornado ravaged state.

Isn’t it crazy that all the dishes are still in the china cabinet…seemingly untouched?

That autumn orange stain kills me. What was I thinking?!

How about the lovely pieces of sheet metal in the middle of the table. Oh, and the steel pole that is coming through the header of the window? That pole, right after we went in to assess the damage, was inches from the dining table. 

Now let’s take a look after the rebuild started.

This dining room was the only dining space in our house before the rebuild. When we took down a wall in the kitchen it allowed for us to have a kitchen table that we use regularly so now this space is our formal dining room. 

The biggest difference is that we bumped out the wall with the window to allow room for a new walk-in pantry in my laundry room. We also raised the ceilings in the house from 8 foot to 10 foot. That in and of itself made a huge difference in making the house feel more open and bigger.

Since I wanted to use a darker gray in this space, I had to have the wainscoting to balance it out. It also gives the space a more formal feel (in my opinion).

We bought the table before the walls even went up in this space. I love entertaining so I wanted to be able to seat a lot of people. I fell in love with this table when I saw it and even better, it was on close out! It’s a little over 9 feet…it’s huge! After we bought it though, we worried that it wouldn’t fit in the space. Turns out, it was like it was made for the space.

The chairs were a different story. We purchase and returned 2 sets of chairs before finally finding these at Target online.

This 1970’s Thomasville dresser was a big find for me. I loved the dark gray and thought it would look good agains the white wainscoting. Once we got it home, we discovered that it had been lime green before. Why on earth would you paint such a beautiful piece a neon lime green? It does need a little bit of work…some of the drawers and the center doors stick so one day I would like to strip it down and re-paint it. I’m thinking navy with silver or chrome handles.

The chandelier is another piece that was tricky to find. The fixture that we purchased originally for this space was much too small so it got moved to the entry way and a new one was purchased for the dining room.

With the help of Target, Hobby Lobby and HomeGoods, I recently finished decorating the rest of the space. I now consider this formal dining room *mostly* finished.
