A kitchen that went from drab to fab. I hope you enjoy this tour of my dream kitchen.
Before the destruction of our home and the subsequent rebuild, I was constantly dreaming of ways to turn my functional but drab kitchen into more of a dream kitchen. I had tons and tons of pictures saved from Houzz so when we found out insurance was not going total our house but pay for it to be gutted down to the studs, we started drawing up new plans.
Before I show you the after, let’s take a look at the before. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of the kitchen before it was destroyed but this will maybe give you an idea of the layout. Before, it was a tiny 12 x 12 closed in kitchen. We straightened and moved out the angled wall and removed the wall that divided the breakfast area and the kitchen.
Before
After
Removing a wall and raising the ceilings from 8 foot to 10 foot ceilings made a huge difference. If I had never stepped foot in this house and was looking at these before and after pictures for the first time, I don’t think I could possibly imagine how it could have be done. I really doesn’t even look like the same house!
The custom cabinets are probably my most favorite part of this kitchen. I may have gone a teeny bit overboard adding pullouts, the display cabinets and the hoods over the stove and sink but it was totally worth it! All of the drawers in this kitchen are super functional as well. If I were to design another kitchen I would definitely do as many drawers as possible….specifically deep drawers. The drawers under my cook top house our pots, pans and lids and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
In the hood over the cook top, I requested a ledge so that I could decorate for the holidays. I also knew that I wanted spice racks and since they didn’t work in the lower cabinets, we added those into the hood as well!
I really, really, really wanted marble countertops but in trying to keep within the budget on countertops (hahahaha!), I had to compromise with a marble backsplash and go with the much more affordable black granite countertops. I actually like how the cook top blends with the countertops because let’s be honest, the hood and the pot filler needed to be the focal points of this wall.
The granite on the island was definitely a splurge. It was the first slab I was immediately drawn to and after much discussion, we decided we could swing using it for the island.
We initially chose to do a 60/40 stainless steel sink but after using my best friends’s Granite composite sink I HAD to have one. It was quite a bit more but more than worth the investment.
