From shed to play house, follow the progress of this shed as it’s transformed into a play house for 2 little girls.
Weeks after we lost our home to a tornado, a church so very kindly built us a shed to keep what was left of our belongings.
When we figured out that we would be able to build a barn on our property, we knew the shed would no longer be needed for it’s original purpose so even before we moved into our house, we talked about turning it into a play house for our girls. Well, my friends, now is the time.
We will be doing this in steps as our budget allows but our hope is to have it mostly done by their birthday in July.
The first step after getting it cleaned out was to move it. It was right in the middle of our backyard and it blocked our view of the girls play set from various parts of our yard. You can see part of their play set in the picture below.
With some ummmm……creative (read: Red Neck) engineering and a wholelotta prayer, the shed began it’s move. I think I had my eyes covered the whole time they were moving it. It was so nerve wracking! Luckily, it mostly held together for the move.
In the process of the move, we disturbed a bunny nest. Don’t worry, none of the bunnies were harmed in the process. They were all old enough to fend for themselves and took off at first chance.
I love having the play shed where it is….right next to the play set. Now that we have it moved, we have a view of the entire backyard and can see our girls playing on the play set from every patio in our backyard.
Man, we really need to get some trees planted. We had some but the tornado pretty much uprooted all of the ones in our backyard.
Now to get the outside looking like a play house, we have a few things to do.
The Beginnings of a Play house
Exterior
The things we plan to do on the outside are as follows:
- Remove the front doors, cut back the front wall about 3 feet for a covered porch and add a door on the right and a window on the left. I’m picturing a window box under the window.
- A window (with shutters and window boxes) on each side so it will get great light from the east and west. I’m kind of jealous because the only windows we have on the east or west are in our master bedroom so the rest of the house always feels dark….even with all of the curtains and blinds open.
- Replace trim and paint. We haven’t decided on paint colors for the outside yet. I wanted white but with the red dirt and the wind that we have here, that’s not really a good idea.
- Add a deck/porch onto the front.
Interior
For the inside, my not yet 5 year old girls requested the following:
- Shiplap – Be still my Fixer Upper/Joanna Gaines loving heart. I must be doing something right with these two!
- Pink and purple walls – I managed to talk them into white walls and pink and purple decor.
- A chandelier
- A couch
I have my work cut out for me but I think I can handle it. I am working on the plan for the interior and will post the plan as soon as I have it done. I’ll also be posting the progress of the play shed as we get things completed.
