Now that you’ve seen our mud bench/drop zone, I figured I would go ahead and give you a tour of our laundry room.
Before our (re)build, our laundry room was actually two different rooms. In our first build (I know this is confusing), the plans we went with came with a laundry room and no garage. After being in that house for a year, we added on a two story garage. In order to get upstairs from the interior of the house rather than through the garage, we decided to add on an office/mudroom with an entrance to the stairs.
When we were making changes to the new plan for our (re)build, we really wanted a mud bench. After playing around with the existing footprint, we decided to combine the two rooms and make one big laundry room with five different purposes/zones.
The Pantry
The first “zone” we added was a pantry. I didn’t have a true pantry before so when hubby figured out how to add a walk-in pantry, I was beyond ecstatic! My pantry is still a work in progress as far as organization and since it’s an open pantry, I have a couple of ideas swirling through my head to give it a little more visual interest.
Also, you might notice the cabinet doors to the left of the pantry. This cabinet houses all my dishes, serving dishes, vases and entertaining pieces such as beverage dispensers. I don’t have a china cabinet like I did before so this was a nice bonus!
The Mud Bathroom
Another thing that we wanted to add to this area was a mud bath. We live on an acreage so there’s a lot of work that goes on outside. To keep hubby from dragging cut grass & mud through the house, a bathroom with a shower closest to the point of entry was a must! It’s a small bathroom and is hard to photograph. Plus the first thing you see when the door is open is the toilet (sigh) so trust me when I say there’s a full bath behind that door in the picture below. Maybe someday, I’ll give you a mini tour of it but today is not that day.
As you can see in the picture above, the stairs I spoke about above are to the left and the two doors on the right are a large broom closet and our hot water tank closet. We tried to get the hot water tank out to the garage this time around but it just couldn’t be done….at least not without a HUGE expense. You might have also noticed a door to the left. That door goes out to a third car garage that we added. It is currently being used as a workout room.
The Home Office
The third zone was a small office area. This area is where I pay bills and take care of other home matters. This area currently needs some serious organization that I hope to get to soon.
The Mud Bench
Then there is, of course, the mud bench….our drop zone that I posted about HERE. This area has been a lifesaver since the girls started school!
The Laundry
The main focus of the laundry room is, of course……the laundry. In this area we have a counter above the washer/dryer, a sink and my favorite part of all, the folding counter with sorting baskets underneath!
Y’all, this laundry room took longer to plan out than any other room or area in our house. Technically, the square footage of the laundry room is larger than our kitchen but with so many “zones” it was needed! To this day, I am still amazed how two very small rooms with barely any storage was transformed into this!

What an awesome space. I am quite jealous. My washer and dryer are in the basement with no separation from the workshop or the cars. Your laundry room is lovely.
