When we were planning out our laundry room for our rebuild, I put in a request to keep our cleaning closet for all of our cleaning supplies and tools. Thankfully, we were able to keep it and make it a little bit bigger! It’s always been somewhat organized but it got to the point where I needed a little bit more efficiency so with about $20, I was able to organize it how I wanted.
It really didn’t take much to get this closet in tip top shape. I know not everyone has a dedicated or big enough space but with just a few items, you too can turn a closet into an efficient and organized cleaning closet.

Use Hooks
Hooks are a great way to clear up any floor space you might need. Most floor cleaning tools (and other tools for that matter) have a handle or holes that allow for hanging. By installing some hooks, you can clear up floor space that can be used for the bigger floor care tools like vacuum cleaners or carpet shampooers. We already had the hooks pictured above but almost any hooks will work. Before we installed these hooks, I used S-hooks on the hanging bar to hang our cleaning tools. I also use command hooks to hang smaller items.
For the longest time, I had the drying rack that goes inside our dryer just floating around the laundry room. We would just move it around if it was in our way. I finally had hubby use a couple of the hooks that we had replaced on our mud bench and now it’s hanging out of the way in the cleaning closet.
Shelving
Some type of shelving is a definite must. If there are no shelves in your closet, they can easily be added. Whether it’s using the space above the hanging bar or an affordable small free standing shelving system, having shelves will create a space to store things that cannot be hung or in the floor. I store cleaning supplies and small cleaning appliances (such as the iron and garment steamer) on the shelves in our closet.
Baskets, Bins, Lazy Susans
Using baskets, bins and lazy susans to group like items will make it easy to find what you need in a moments notice. I purchased two baskets; one to contain the attachments for our steam mop, vacuum and carpet shampooer and another for dusting supplies. In between the the baskets I have a lazy susan for the bottles of cleaning products. I also used a basket I already had for some insecticides we occasionally use in the house (#countryliving). Those items are stored on the very top shelf in the closet out of reach of little curious hands.
One last think that I used was a mesh laundry bag (hung in the corner on the back hooks) to store extra plastic shopping bags. I admit, am a bag hoarder (bag lady?). They are very useful (and much cheaper than bubble wrap) for packing breakables. I use them A LOT when I pack away breakable holiday decor.
