These spooky luminaries are cute and can be made practically for free!
Being a crafty person that I am I have a tendency to hoard things; things that I think can be made into something else. I’m the same way with things I think that can be used to organize things. It sometimes becomes a problem.
About a year ago, I began buying laundry detergent pods. They came in big square containers and once they were empty, I just couldn’t bring myself to throw them out. So I saved them until I could figure out a purpose for them.
Most of the containers I had were orange so naturally I thought jack-o-lanterns and then I thought that a bunch of jack-0-lanterns would just be boring so I decided to branch out with a bit of spray paint and some other supplies I had on hand.
Spooky Luminaries
For the jack-o-lanterns there was no need to paint. I just cut out the the eyes, nose & mouth and pasted them on. You could also draw them on but I’m more of a cut and paste kind of girl.
I did the same for the ghost after I spray painted the container with a glossy white.
Frankenstein was fun to make! After cutting out the pieces for his face, I remembered I needed something for the bolts on the side of his head. It took a little bit of digging through my crafting supply stash but I finally came across an unopened package of round magnets. I took a roll of the magnets, split them in have and applied half on the inside and half on the outside to create the “bolts”.
For the mummy, I simply wrapped some gauze from the Dollar Tree around the container, added googly eyes and then wrapped the container again with another roll of gauze.
Once you’ve finished your luminaries, drop in an LED candle or a small set of twinkle lights. If you plan to use them outside, you will need to add some kind of weight like some rocks or marbles so they won’t blow away.
If you like these little monsters, pin the image below and start saving up those containers!

These are adorable and perfect in so many ways. I love that you are able to swap out faces since they are cut out and glued or taped on. And to be able to add lights makes them that much more adorable!! And you can’t beat the price!! An all around great project to do in just a little amount of time! Thanks for sharing….
