I kept hearing everyone talking about how it felt like Fall where they were but I was sitting over here in shorts and a t-shirt because our temps were in the 80’s.
Well, Fall has finally showed up. A lot of our leaves are still green but they are slowly changing. The nights are crisp and I keep wanting to turn on the heat but it’s still fairly warm during the day so no heater just yet.
I said I wasn’t going to do a Fall home tour because I didn’t go all out this year but there’s something to be said about simplicity.
I’m kind of excited about Thanksgiving this year. As a kid I loved Thanksgiving. My great aunt always hosted and she would make a HUGE Thanksgiving feast every year. The women would cook and then the kids had to do the dishes afterward. I didn’t mind it too much though because I learned so much being in the kitchen with my aunt. She was a wonderful cook!
The food was always served buffet style at the main table. The kids, of course, had their own table but I always wanted to sit at the table with the adults.
After the Thanksgiving meal, the men would move to the living room and watch football while the women stayed at the table and chatted. The kids, when the temps were mild….which they frequently were, would play outside. Sometimes we played football or soccer.
Those were good times.
Since becoming an adult, Thanksgiving hasn’t ever been quite the same as it was when I was kid. I know it’s hard when the kids grow up and have their own families but I am determined to create some traditions and memories that will make my girls smile when they think back to Thanksgiving like I do.
We are hosting Thanksgiving this year as I have done the past 2 years. We are going with a traditional Thanksgiving meal…turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, hot rolls, pumpkin pie…..
It will likely be served buffet style at the kitchen island.
The kids will have their own table with some fun activities and the adults will have their own table. You know, at the fancy table where kids aren’t EVER allowed to eat.
Afterward, I’m sure the men will either head to the family room or upstairs to the theater room to watch football. The kids will probably run a muck in the house. And at some point, we will break out the board games and have some good ol’ family fun.
And then I’ll break out the Christmas decor!! 🙂
