Pinterest can be overwhelming when it comes to getting ideas for decorating your home but this post will help you focus in on the key elements of your pins to help you get started in the right direction.
When we were (re)building our house, I spent countless hours browsing Pinterest trying to figure out how to design it, what finishes I wanted and how to decorate our home once it was finished. There were times I got so overwhelmed that I just shut down completely.
Then one day while browsing, a light bulb went off. I figured out how to draw inspiration and get ideas without getting totally overwhelmed.
If you struggle with trying to translate your pins into your own decor, I have 3 tips for you that should help you get over that decorating hump. Whether you are working on a project as big as building a home or as small as just trying to decorate a table, these tips will work for you!
Using Pinterest to Decorate Your Home
Create a Dedicated Board
Create a dedicated board for your project. This can be a secret board or a public board. It doesn’t really matter. This board is strictly for the project you are working on. Don’t try to sneak in pins that you think you can use for a later project. Save those to another board.
Start Pinning
Search for and pin anything related to your project that catches your attention. Don’t be too selective here. There’s a purpose for this, I promise. Also, in the description, enter the thing(s) that made you want to pin it. Was it a specific item? Was it the colors? Was it the layout or design? Be as specific as you can.

Review Your Board
Once you have a pretty good number of pins, go back and look at all the images that you pinned. You will most likely see a common element. Did you pin a lot of rooms with the same color scheme? Layout? Are there a lot of pins with a certain decor item or set of items? Congratulations! You’ve just created a mood board!
Start Decorating!
Hopefully, you’ve been able to put together some sort of look. Do you feel inspired? Now it’s time to go shopping!
Just a couple of tips before you start shopping and/or decorating.
- Don’t try to copy the image exactly. What works in someone else’s space most likely isn’t going to work in your space (Just because you pinned an image of a specific room or decor element, doesn’t mean have to decorate that exact same room, the exact same way or use the exact same element in your decor).
- Take your time. Once you’ve created your mood board, there’s no need to rush out and get it done (unless you are on a tight deadline). Hang the image(s) up in your home and let the ideas sink in a little more. Sometimes I’ll have a plan but then after thinking about it a while, then plan changes and it’s almost always for the better!
Here are some examples of how I used Pins to inspire my decor.
Pinspiration: Liz Marie Blog
Interpretation: I loved the random letters and the idea of making a sign for my family room. You can see the full “interpretation” post HERE.
Pinspiration: Design, Dining and Diapers
Interpretation: It didn’t ever dawn on me to improve upon our cube shelves to make them look more like a piece of furniture until I saw Taryn’s hack. See my full post HERE.
Pinspiration: Daffodil Design
Interpretation: I pinned the pinspiration image a few years ago as inspiration for when we transitioned my girls to their big girl room. I was so excited to finally be able to pull it all together. Check out their full room tour.

Thank you! You can do it! Just remember to make sure it reflects you and not the inspiration picture.
